THERE IS SO MUCH CRITICISM ABOUT THE BODY TYPE ONE SHOULD HAVE TO QUALIFY FOR SOMETHING – Maria Nailonga Donna Kamahulu

From a shy child in northern Namibia to a decorated fashion model with over 8 years in the Namibia Fashion Industry, Maria Nailonga Donna Kamahulu’s story is not just about winning on the runway; it’s about personal growth, overcoming self-doubt, and the ability to persevere. Reflecting on her beginnings, Maria says, “I was a very shy kid, hence I never thought I would choose a hobby that requires me to be in front of so many people.” This early shyness didn’t stop her from discovering her passion for painting in high school. Despite feeling intimidated and not as strong as her classmates, her determination won her titles like Miss Epembe 2019, Miss Nalitungwe 2022 and Miss Triumphant College 2023. Maria’s journey was marked by challenges and criticism, but she took them as as an opportunities to grow, and continually strived to improve her skills. Marian added that “I think that I’m not only speaking to myself but a lot models out there, there is so much criticism about the body type one should have to qualify for something. I live my body, my height, everything about me and I have come to a point were if someone thinks I’m not a perfect fit than it’s really not about me but what they want and what they’re looking for which is not me and that is okay.”

Maria’s wish led her to explore catwalk modeling, which tested her determination as she was mainly a pageant model and not into the runway. Her success came at MTC Windhoek Fashion Week, a moment she describes as surreal: “Every time I was at rehearsals, I kept wondering if I’m really there or it’s just a dream.” This experience underscored her journey from dreaming to achieving in the competitive world of fashion modelling.

At the heart of Maria’s story is the unwavering support of her family and friends and resilience on her part as she stated that “I don’t think in a million years I would be here today but it’s because of [support from people in my life] that I’m here today,” Maria’s journey is also a reflection of the growth of the modeling industry in Namibia, which has grown into a niche sector.
