The 2023 Katutura Fashion Week celebrated its fifth anniversary with a spectacular two-day event on the 24th and 25th of November at the Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre in Windhoek. This distinguished event, which showcases the unique and vibrant tapestry of African fashion, has become a highlight in Namibia’s fashion calendar.

The event featured designers from all over Africa, including Zambia, Namibia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, and Angola, and was a melting pot of designs and cultural influences. This gathering of artists showcased a wide range of designs, from traditional themes to sophisticated business attire and exquisite crochet work. The variety of styles created a lively and fascinating spectacle that celebrated African fashion’s originality and uniqueness.

The celebration of Mbariomundu (Riri) Kuhanga, who won the Most Photogenic Model online contest with an incredible 1935 votes, was a notable highlight of the event. Her victory, which came with a N$500 a reward from Zed360, was a testimonial not just to her photogenic appeal, but also to her portrayal of the vibrancy and spirit of African beauty.

Katutura Fashion Week’s runway had a laudable emphasis on diversity and inclusivity, with models of diverse origins and body shapes exhibiting the designs. This approach not only challenged conventional beauty standards, but also provided a more inclusive image of beauty, which resonated strongly with the public and reflected the developing fashion narrative.

The event organisers used the opportunity to show their appreciation to the sponsors and partners whose participation and support were critical to the event’s success. The National Arts Council of Namibia, Zed360, the Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre, Rocket Media, Focus FM, Africa Diagnostics, Energy100 FM, Limkokwing University Namibia, Magazine le Afrique, Style Brazil, Urban Arts, and Dave Sombeyo Properties all received appreciation awards. These acknowledgements emphasised the value of partnership and collaboration in the arts and fashion sectors.
Katutura Fashion Week is more than just a fashion show; it is an important platform for developing local talent, contributing to the expansion of Namibia’s fashion sector, and positioning it on the world stage. The event’s emphasis on cultural expression, innovation, and inclusivity places it as a major force in the African fashion and culture narrative. The success of the 2023 edition not only honours the event’s progress over the last five years, but also lays the groundwork for its future significance in creating African design.
