Namibian model Ndapewa Omagano Leonard grew up in Windhoek after moving from Eunda Village in the Omusati region, and her passion for modelling was evident from a young age. “I always had a passion for modeling… all I wanted was to be a model,” Ndapewa stated, reflecting on her childhood dreams. Despite facing a lack of support from her guardians, the encouragement from her siblings, who fondly called her their ‘super model’ or ‘Miss Namibia’, played a crucial role in shaping her self-confidence. “My siblings cheering me on was a +100. It was motivation,” she remarked.

Ndapewa’s entry into the competitive world of pageantry was marked by both excitement and apprehension. Her victory as Miss Hage Geingob High School 2022 and Miss Photogenic in the same pageant was not just an accolade but a validation of her dedication and skill. “Being selected Miss Photogenic is not as easy as it looks like,” she admitted, highlighting the hard work behind her success. In 2022 she took part in Miss Raise A voice which she won but her participation in Miss Raise A Voice 2022 was not just about winning a title but about making a meaningful impact in the lives of others she stated that “I wanted to speak for the voiceless learners… be a big sister they looked up to.”

Ndapewa move into the world of fashion shows, particularly her debut at the prestigious Katutura Fashion Week 2023, marks a significant chapter in her modelling career. This transition from pageantry to runway revealed the big differences and unique challenges inherent in each type of modelling. Reflecting on her experience, Ndapewa spoke about the often-overlooked realities of runway modelling adding that “the runway and pageantry are completely different,” she stated, emphasizing the distinct nature of these two worlds. Her first encounter with the runway was at the College of Arts (COTA) Fashion Show, however the biggest challenges was the 2023 Katutura Fashion Week which featured renowned designers and attendees “This was my first time doing Katutura Fashion Week 2023 so I was a bit nervous,” Ndapewa confessed, highlighting the pressure and excitement that accompanied this new venture.
The backstage environment, a whirlwind of activity and equal treatment regardless of experience, was a revelatory experience for Ndapewa. “What happens backstage is indescribable. Nobody gets special treatment, whether you’re a newbie or not,” she revealed, stressing the equal opportunities and often hectic nature of these events (Katutura Fashion Week).

Ndapewa’s insight extends beyond mere observation, offering practical advice for aspiring models who want to go into runway modeling especially for fashion shows, emphasizing the importance of holistic preparation, she advised, “One should be mentally, emotionally, and physically prepared, work out, have a schedule, drink a lot of water as well as practice your walk.” This comprehensive approach to readiness highlights the rigorous discipline and dedication required to succeed in the competitive world of runway modelling.
Ndapewa’s journey in modelling has been a learning curve, teaching her that passion must be balanced with practical considerations and compromises. Despite facing challenges such as height restrictions in runway modelling, her determination remains unwavering. Her philosophy is to embrace every opportunity with an open mind and a flexible approach, be it in photography, runway, or pageantry.
